One of the most thrilling spectacles in cricket is watching batsmen display their power and skill, enthralling fans with astonishing innings that have etched themselves in the pages of history. The ICC Cricket World Cup serves as a grand platform for such extraordinary performances.
The importance of these remarkable innings is much more than the figures on the scoreboard. Guptill and Gayle’s performances epitomized the essence of ODI cricket, enthralling the spectators with their dominance and fearlessness. These innings showcased the development of batting in the modern era, where boundaries were cleared with relative ease and spectators were treated to an unparalleled display of brute force.
Let’s check the batsman with highest individual score in ICC Cricket World Cup.
Martin Guptill
New Zealand’s Martin Guptill holds the record for the highest individual score in World Cup history. Guptill scored an incredible 237 not out against the West Indies in 2015. Batting at a strike rate of 145.39, he took only 163 balls to reach this milestone and hit 11 sixes and 24 fours in the process. New Zealand scored a total of 393 runs on the scorecard and bowled out the West Indies for 250 to win by 143 runs.
Chris Gayle
Known as “The Universe Boss” for his destructive batting, Chris Gayle is regarded as the greatest T20 player cricket has ever seen, but he has also shown his prowess with the bat in the ODI World Cup. He is the only player to score three centuries – a triple century in Tests, a double century in ODIs and a century in T20Is. In the World Cup, Gayle scored 215 runs against Zimbabwe in 2015, which was the fastest and first double century of the tournament. Gayle took 147 balls to reach 215 runs and hit 16 sixes and 10 fours.
Gary Kirsten
Gary Kirsten is considered a successful cricket coach nowadays, but he was a menace in the 90s. The South African batsman scored an unbeaten 188 off 159 balls to defeat the United Arab Emirates in the 1996 World Cup. Kirsten hit four sixes and 13 fours in his innings. South Africa won by 169 runs.
