The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest honor given in the Indian cinema industry, named after Indian cinema pioneer Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke. The award is given for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award was first presented in 1969 and has been presented every year since then.
The award is presented annually by the Directorate of Film Festivals, Government of India, at the National Film Awards ceremony. The recipient of the award is selected by a committee constituted by the Directorate of Film Festivals, Government of India, consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry including film critics, filmmakers and industry veterans. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is a prestigious award and is highly regarded by the Indian film industry.
Who was Dadasaheb Phalke?
Dadasaheb Phalke was a producer, director and screenwriter who directed India’s first feature-length film, Raja Harishchandra in 1913. During his 19-year career, he made 95 feature-length films and 27 short films. Here are some of his notable movies:

Amount to be given in Dadasaheb Phalke Award
Under this award from the Government of India, the winner is given ten lakh rupees in cash, a Swarna Kamal medal and a shawl. In the 65th National Film Awards, Vinod Khanna, a famous actor of Hindi films, was selected for the most prestigious award of the Indian film world, ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’. Vinod Khanna was posthumously awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contribution to the film industry.
